Spontaneity re- Edinburgh

I arrived home to Dooley telling me about the New Zealand v Scotland match in the world cup in rugby which was on in Edinburgh in September. 30 minutes later myself, Dooley, my brother and Conor had tickets, flights and accomadation booked.

Now that’s what I call decisiveness. It’s sounding like it’ll be an awesome weekend. It’s a long time to wait though.

Airport observations and a tonka truck of a hangover

I went home last weekend to visit my pals and family. It was awesome. For various reasons, I needed to go home and get pissed and good lord, that I did.

This is what I can remember from Saturday night-

  • Leaving twelfth lock
  • chatting to conor on train
  • going into odeon
  • Dancing by the table
  • Dancing my ass off on the dancefloor – alot of which involved kneeling or lying on floor
  • buying shots for everyone – €60
  • drinking quite a few of those shots
  • someone taking a picture of the shots
  • chatting for ages with the aftershave guy in the toilets
  • eating a hotdog
  • singing oasis on grafton street with buskers
  • sitting on bottom step of nightlink stairs
  • getting sick in some clonsilla road garden
  • crawling up endas stairs

Quite good really but these are my flashbacks – I can rememember nothing in between. All evidence points to it being a great night.

Sunday was not good. Enda very kindly fed me bacon which helped but I felt like crap for a day and a half after that. It’s a sign of age I think (I’m a whopping 27 now).

On my way home on Wednesday morning I made a few observations at the airport.

  • Nobody seems to notice the cone instructing not to walk beside the killer jet engine
  • The best seat to get on a Ryanair flight is the very back seat. It means you’re first off and it’s always free when you wait till the end to board.
  • 5.30am chicken salad sandwich for breakfast is fucking disgusting
  • Ryanair have no clue about organising the boarding of flights – it’s a bloody free for all
  • Despite their flaws – Ryanair absolutely rock. £48 return within one week of flying. Awesome

I’ll be back in Eire next weekend and hopefully my body will be more accustomed to the onslaught of Guinness it shall receive (it is Paddys weekend and Guinness must be drunk (as must I)).

Australia Day 2007

Australia Day 2004 It’s been a whole three years since I was in Sydney celebrating Australia day. I’ve done a lot since then but so much of me wishes I was back there waving my paper flags. Those were good times . It’s also nice to see the Aussies kicking England’s ass in the cricket once again. I don’t watch cricket as it’s hellishly boring, I only heard it on the news.

Sweet Memories

A good buddy of mine sent me this in email format – well worth a read. It’ll make you think.

Ah I remember them well Way back…. I’m talking about Hide and seek in the park The shop down the road, Hopscotch, Donkey, skipping, handstands, stuck in the mud, football with an old can, Dandy, Beano, Twinkle and Roly Poly, Hula Hoops, Jumping the stream, Building a swing from a tyre and a piece of rope tied to a tree, (If you live in Dublin the lampost) building tree-houses, climbing up onto roofs,Tennis on the street, the smell of the sun and fresh cut grass,Hubba Bubba bubble gum and 2p Flogs, macaroon bars and woppas, 3p refreshers and wham bars, golf ball chewing gums and liquorice whips, desperate dan and roy of the rovers, sherbit dips and mr. freezes, marathon bars and everlasting gobstoppers, An ice cream cone on a warm summer night from the van that plays a tune, chocolate or vanilla or strawberry or maybe neopolitan

Wait…… Watching Saturday Morning cartoons…short commercials, battle of the Planets, Road Runner, He-Man, Swapshop, and Why Don’t You, Transformers, how do you do?, bosco, forty-coats, the littlest hobo and lassie, chucklevision, little house on the prairie and highway to heaven, Or staying up for Knight Rider, Airwolf or V when around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere A million midge bites, sticky fingers and mud all over you, knee-pads on your jeans, Cops and Robbers, Rounders, tip the Can, Climbing trees, spin the bottle, Building igloos out of snow banks Walking to school, no matter what the weather, Running till you were out of breath Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt, Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights, Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.Being tired from playing.. Remember that?

The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team, Water balloons were the ultimate weapon Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle I’m not finished just yet… Eating raw jelly, orange squash ice pops Remember when… There were two types of sneakers – girls and boys and Dunlop Green Flash and the only time you wore them at school, was for “P.E.”,! gola football boots It wasn’t odd to have two or three “best” friends, when nobody owned a purebred dog, when 25p was decent pocket money when you’d reach into a muddy gutter for a penny, when nearly everyone’s mum was at home when the kids got there, when it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents, when any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carrygroceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it,when being sent to the head’s office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn’t because of muggings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents ! and grandparents were a much bigger threat! and some of us are still afraid of them!!!

Remember when…. Decisions were made by going “eeny- meeny- miney-mo.” Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, “do over!” “Race issue” meant arguing about who ran the fastest Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in “Monopoly” the game of life and connect four, atari 2600’s and commadore 64’s, The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs It was unbelievable that Kerbs wasn’t an Olympic event Having a weapon in school, meant being caught with a biro barrel pea shooter or an elstic band, Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable vitamins,Ice cream ! was considered a basic food group,Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true Abilities were discovered because of a “double dare” Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED!!!!

Those were the good times – when we didn’t know what a mortgage was, or a what a looming deadline meant.

Geek resolutions

As it’s new year and my motivation is at an all time low, I think a list of TODOs (or new years resultions) is needed. Some of those listed are techy and some are not but all of them are aimed at improving my life.

I will

  • Finish the new design of this site – as you can see, it’s still a work in progress
  • Comment my code
  • Finish projects I have started
  • Document my code properly
  • Use UML – even if it’s just in my head
  • Move to Ubuntu on my home machine
  • Caption all my photos – all 8500 of them
  • Read all the books I bought
  • Read non-techy books too
  • Cook more
  • Eat less
  • Eat healthier
  • Find some way of feeling healthier that I can actually stick to (Gym is a bit too much commitment)
  • Start to budget my outgoings properly
  • Stop calling my dog “the rodent”
  • Learn that Friday does not have to equal “getpissedday”
  • Stop watching soap operas – comedy series like King of Queens and Scrubs will remain on my Sky+ planner though
  • Contribute to an open source project
  • Help fellow developers more
  • Always keep in mind that I know only a fraction of what I think I know
  • Be in a good mood
  • Write another useful Firefox extension that uses a custom XPCOM component
  • Use Patterns in code more
  • Stop driving like an idiot just so I can get home quicker
  • Go to Ireland to see my friends and family more
  • Go to the summer house in Norway
  • Save money
  • And finally – keep this blog up to date

There’s quite a few there so I think it’s more of a two year plan. I have been working on an eight year plan with Gill too, but it’s still a bit up in the air but very exciting – as along as all goes well –

I will also (I thought of some more)

  • Move to IMAP instead of POP email
  • Backup more
  • Learn how to use SVN properly
  • Go to LinuxWorld in London (as long as it’s not on Gill’s birthday like last year)
  • Get a whiteboard at home
  • ……..I’ll add some more as I think of them

Christmas Charity – the Open Source way

Every year for the last few years I have given to charity at Christmas. Last year it was Oxfam but this year I wanted to do something a bit different. In the early days of Aggreg8 development, I got a $10 donation and it freaked me out, I coded for days with a crazy energy and a boosted ego, knowing that someone thought that what I was doing was worth some of their hard earned cash. So this year, I have decided to give $5 to 10 different Open Source projects. The projects I have chosen are ones that I use on a day to day basis and really admire.

If we could all do something like this then Open source would continue to thrive and we will all reap the benefits for years and years to come. Joel noted that most people don’t want credit for donating but I do as donating is clearly not a selfless act ;).

Testing Aer Arran

Aer arran Logo
Last weekend I went to see my dad near Galway. This time I didn’t fly with my beloved Ryanair to Shannon but with Aer Arran direct to galway from Manchester. It’s a small ariline with small planes so I was hopeful to have a quick and trouble free trip. I did, apart from a 20 minute delay in Manchester on friday night (which is understandable) and a silly bitch on check in that made me check my small rucksack in instead of taking it on board. I quoted the size restriction from the website and that the bag was within those limits. Silly tart was having none of it. Some battles are not worth fighting though. All in all Aer arran scores 8 out of 10. From my Dads house to my office took only 4 and a half hours – amazing.

Ireland June 06

As I mentioned before, I was in ireland last week at Marty’s wedding and visiting my folks. I now have the photos up – some quite embarrassing but I ahve a rule that if it’s on the camera – it’s going online 🙂

There are a few of note – Peter nearly getting drowned by Bobby, Myself and Gill on our 6th aniversary with the arran islands in the background, Myself and a very nervous Clav – it was a great week
